We had a great event in Wisconsin Rapids tonight at the McMillan Library here — cheese was sampled and memories were shared. The father of one of the women in attendance ran the Bowman Dairy in Fitchburg, WI – I remember playing with wooden blocks kept in Bowman Dairy milk crates when I was a little kid growing up in Madison. Another older gentleman recalled an era when his local cheese plant took deliveries each morning from local farmers who would walk the milk in from a mile and a half a way. One man brought a large can of milk by wheelbarrow; another brought two cans, by cart. Thanks to Eric Norton (no relation!) for coordinating the event.
We also had a chance to share cheeses made by Wisconsin masters on KARE11’s Showcase Minnesota program this morning — luckily for us, host Rob Hudson spent a number of years in Wisconsin and loves his cheese. Between the cheese and Becca’s telegenic nature, we made it work.
On an unrelated note: If you’re even in Wisconsin Rapids, try the burgers at Sportsmen’s Pub. Terrific thin, slightly charred patties on buttery, flakey buns.
Off to bed for me. We’ll be on the radio in Wausau tomorrow morning, appearing at Emy J’s Garage in Steven’s Point at 1pm and then doing a 4pm event at Janke Book Shop with master cheesemaker Larry Steckbauer of Sartori. Should be a great day. Really, really busy, but great.
