We didn’t cross paths with cheesemaker Jerry Winter on our trip across Wisconsin, and although he wasn’t a certified master, it sounds as though he certainly knew his cheese. Winter died this June, after a long career of making cheese including 25 years at Union Star of Zittau. David Metzig talked to the Oshkosh Northwestern about Winter’s style:
“I really learned a lot from Jerry. He was a good cheese maker and a hard worker,” Metzig said. “He was consistent how he did things and very methodical. He had a routine that assured quality cheese.”
